Three Youths Are Charged In Slaying of Milkman Here Continued from First Page James G. Rennie, Virginia Dairy president, said the firm had decided to offer a $2,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of Atkinson's slayers. Earlier, radio station WLEE had posted a $100 reward.
Walker sat calmly in detective offices at police headquarters and told of the attack. His Story This was his story: The four had been at a downtown night club until about 2:15 a.m. last Tuesday, chatting and dancing with friends. They left and rode to the North Side, spotting Atkinson's truck on Fendall ave. They watched him for about 10 minutes.
One of the youths suggested getting milk to drink, and they talked of waiting until the truck had left, then stealing the milk from the front porches, Walker said. "Just Doing Nothing "We were out there just doing nothing at the time then this wild notion hit one of them to get some money." They parked their car at Griffin ave. and Ladies Mile about a block from the scene, and walked to where the had stopped. They watched Atkinson deliver milk to 3120 Griffin ave. and return to his truck, get in and apparently begin to refill his carrying case.
"Misfired First Time" Walker said one of the other youths handed him a revolver. Two, including Walker, stood on the driver's side. the others stood on the opposite side. "It misfired the first time, the second time it went Walker said. "I didn't realize what I was doing until after I did it the man yelled and fell.
the bottles fell that's what scared me off." All four youths ran from the scene back to their parked car, got in and went home, Walker said. Had Atkinson ever seen them, did he know what was about to happen? "No. sir," Walker said, slouching in his chair. Nothing was missing when residents, awakened by noises, found Atkinson's body sprawled on the ground beside his truck about 3:30 a.m. He fell out the open side door after being shot.
