This wacky movie was Jet Li‘s goodbye to Hongkong cinema, before moving to the US and ending up as supporting brawler in worthless trash like The Expendables. He never was an expressive actor, but here he seems to have fun and cut loose in the role of a naive, kind-hearted mainland immigrant who wants to become a professional killer. A whole army of assassins is after the legendary 'Killing Angel', who seems to target only vicious top criminals and now has a massive bounty on his head. Jet is the most unlikely candidate to catch him, but of course nothing is impossible in a Hongkong movie.
It’s good to see Jet Li bow out of Asia with a typically over-the-top… -

As the last film Jet Li made before his transition to Hollywood in the late 90s, Contract Killer is far from one of the action star's best Hong Kong efforts because of the rather uneven distribution of action and comedy. It's still pretty enjoyable stuff but unlike someone like Jackie Chan, I just don't think Li's talents are as suited to comedy and since almost the entire first half is comedic, it doesn't use him all that well. What makes it tolerable though, is that the comedy is surprisingly decent and for once, I didn't find Eric Tsang too overly annoying in what is essentially a co-lead role alongside Li and I appreciate that they don't quite overdo it with…

The pigeons must fly the coup.
This film was originally titled Hitman, and I am of course notably entertained by the thought of Jet Li playing Agent 47. I'm at least for the time being hard set on exclusively watching action films, and I think that's just fine. Speaking of being "just fine," Contract Killer. It took awhile for me to realize just how little action there actually is in this action film, but it's certainly one that does have its moments when you get to Li showcasing why he's one of the best of his generation. I don't think this is the earliest film I've seen with him in it, but as long as my eyes didn't deceive me,…

While every decade of HK action cinema is amazing in their own rights, I’ve come to the conclusion that the 90’s are my personal favorite. The frantic energy and kinetic over the top action set pieces, the unique style that each of these films had, the usual suspects of actors and actresses, something about these films simply trio my trigger.
Contract Killer is no exception. From the HK style comedy to the well edited fights, this is an overlooked gem. Sure it’s not as action-packed or as crazily choreographed as you’d probably like but there’s still enough fun and badass action to go around. I mean it’s Jet Li, of course he’s going to kick ass.
Plus the English dub of the film has a bumping hip hop soundtrack that strangely fits.

I own this movie apart of a two disc DVD double feature. Upon finally getting around to watching this after years of sitting in a pile of DVDs I'm trying to work down. Only to discover this was a heavily edited film that only came in dub and had hip hop music that didn't go along with the vibe of the film. I guess they did a North American release of this film in 2002 and figured they do better sales with these edits in addition to changing the name of the film from Hitman... When I looked into this after viewing I found out that this was Jet Li's last Hong Kong film before heading to the U.S. Seek out the original film before wasting time on this!

Li is a novice hitman who teams up with chancer Eric Tsang as his ‘agent’ to hunt down the murderer of a high-powered executive who left $100m in his will as an ‘avenge fund’.
Li and Tsang make for a charming double act in the film’s first half, blundering their way through the hunt for the mysterious killer. Li has an aversion to harming innocents and Tsang is his usual wideboy self, seemingly experienced in the ways of the professional killer, but obviously out of his depth and together, the first half of the film is them feeling their way into this investigation as well as their roles.
Its light on action, but it begins to amp up the mystery…

It doesn't seem to be on youtube, so you'll have to take my word for it, but this film features the MOST 90s-Rap-Song-Playing-Over-The-Opening-Credits-Detailing-the-Film-You're-About-to-See that you could imagine. Feels like it demands a John Woo or something to follow it up, and while this isn't bad, particularly as a showcase for Jet Li doing his thing, it's also sort of....there. (There is a LOT of goofy comic relief, although there's also a secondary badguy who uses laser pointers to blind his opponents rather than brass knuckles or knives or something, which is interesting)

This feels like an action movie made just for stoners. It’s got a lot of trippy shots and weirdly trippy music as points. It has a great big city at night feel too it similar to Die Hard.
The fight scenes are very creative and the camerawork follows suit. All the action in this movie is extremely dynamic and it flows so effortlessly.
There’s also a bit of cool gunplay thrown in there and I like how the staged fights between an unarmed Jet-Li and a machine gun wielding assassin play out in a very creative way.
Some of the cheesy comedy got kind of cringey at points but never ruined the film for me. Plus there was one bit of comedy that was actually quite solid
I can add this to my list of comfort movies

English part below
6,5
Li is whirling around again and is somehow looking for the King of Killers. He is then himself or not or......what is actually going on here?
Who gives a shit, just like the humor, which at least works every other time. What is important are the chewing bars that are bent. It happens often, hard and charismatic.
Was for me always the better HIGH RISK. So and now the horny US PHASE goes off!!!

Did not expect this to be Jet's action, buddy comedy vehicle. And it's pretty sub-par at that. On the flip side the action is more than solid. Pure 90s Eastern fast paced, combustible action. Truly great to see Jet performing at full speed. The man's fists are scary as hell.

Review by Wonggifs ★★½ 2
Stephen Tung's action-dramedy is clearly ambitious, with sync-sound audio, an international cast that weren't just found on the street, and some pretty snazzy camera-work. It also eschews, for the most part, the silly slapstick comedy that was popular of the era.
However, it still features some nonsensical plotting, while not being funny enough or exciting enough to qualify as a success either as a comedy or an action movie. The latter is especially disappointing given the talent in front of and behind the camera. The final fight scene is a banger, but the film takes an agonising amount of time getting to it, with no real action of note between the opening scene and the hour mark.
Still, Jet Li,…

A Hong Kong action flick with a specially-made hip hop track is not something I realized I needed in my life.
