What is the difference between the town of Saugerties and the Village of Saugerties? ›

Those living in the Village of Saugerties are by definition also within the Town. (They pay both Village and Town taxes, for example.) Those living in the Town of Saugerties but outside of the Village boundaries are not Villagers ... and so they pay Town taxes, but not Village taxes.

The Village of Saugerties where these businesses are located has the distinction of being the first business district in the United States to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The people of Saugerties have always had tremendous pride in who they are, and so they should.

The History

According to town historians, Saugerties is named for a Dutch diminutive (“little sawyer”) that probably referred to Barent Cornelis Volge, who operated a sawmill for a manor house in the 1650s, on land inhabited by the Esopus tribe.

Living in Saugerties offers residents a sparse suburban feel and most residents own their homes. In Saugerties there are a lot of restaurants and parks. Many young professionals live in Saugerties and residents tend to lean conservative. The public schools in Saugerties are above average.

The beach offers a sand beach swimming area with a swimming dock out in the Esopus Creek, a playground area, a fishing area, a kayak/boat launch and restroom facilities.

Saugerties, Dutch for “sawmill,” has a revitalized village center known for its eclectic antique stores and vintage shops, array of restaurants, and the luxurious Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern.

Saugerties is blessed to have the Esopus Creek running through it. The Creek is a 65.4-mile-long tributary of the Hudson River (which borders Saugerties). It drains the east-central Catskill Mountains in New York.

Geography. The town has a total area of 68.0 square miles (176.2 km²), of which 64.5 square miles (167.2 km²) is land and 3.5 square miles (9.0 km²) (5.13%) is water (United States Census Bureau statistics).
